3 Amazing Tips to Get Kids Involved in Laundry Work

Wouldn't it be great if your 9-year-old helped with the weekly laundry? Like most Singaporean families, you're probably doing laundry at least twice a week. A survey has found that a typical family spend about 8 to 10 hours every week on laundry-related tasks. It's more than a day every week!

Laundry can feel like an endless chore, with piles of dirty clothes never quite disappearing. But what if it didn't have to be just another task? With a little creativity, you can turn laundry into an engaging family activity.

As a mother of a 2-year-old daughter, I'd love to share a few tips we use at home to make laundry time productive and fun!

Tip 1: Turn Laundry Into a Game

Give each child their own laundry basket, preferably in their bedroom, to keep their clothes organized and separated. Then, gamify the task!

When it's time to load the washing machine, create a friendly competition:

  • Who can put more clothes into the machine the fastest?
  • Who can find and fold all the socks of the same color?
  • Who can sort the most items correctly by type or color?

By introducing a playful element, you'll transform laundry from a dreaded chore into an exciting challenge your kids will look forward to.

Tip 2: Make Laundry a Family Bonding Activity

With a little effort, laundry can become quality family time. Approach the task with joy, and your kids will mirror your attitude. While folding and sorting washed clothes together, you can:

  • Ask each other fun or thoughtful questions.
  • Play your family's favorite music in the background to lighten the mood.
  • Sing along to a made-up song about laundry (you'd be surprised how creative kids can be!).

Not only will this make the work more enjoyable, but it's also an opportunity to strengthen family bonds.

Tip 3: Let Older Kids Take Ownership

Modern washing machines are no longer complicated—they're designed for ease of use, even for young children. Older kids can take on the responsibility of doing their own laundry with minimal supervision.

If your child can confidently navigate a smartphone, they're more than capable of managing a washing machine!

Teach them to sort, load, and start the machine. Over time, they'll gain a sense of responsibility and an appreciation for the work that goes into keeping the household running smoothly.

Make it a weekly routine with your kids. The time you spend teaching them now will pay off, and it can even become a fun, shared experience.

Laundry doesn't have to feel like a never-ending job. With these tips, you can make it a family affair that teaches responsibility and brings you closer together.
